The most common mistakes when booking excursions on Fuerteventura

Booking takes two minutes. Fuerteventura measures 111 road kilometres from Corralejo down to Morro Jable. Most of what goes wrong here when people book comes out of that mismatch: not from dodgy operators, but from a map that no booking page ever shows you.

Booked from the wrong end of the island

The supply is not spread evenly across the island. In our listings, 36 tours name Corralejo in the title, 14 Morro Jable, 12 Costa Calma, 10 Caleta de Fuste, 8 El Cotillo and exactly one Puerto del Rosario. So if you are staying in Jandía and work your way through the most popular things to do on Fuerteventura, you end up mostly in the north without noticing.

Corralejo to Morro Jable is around 1 hour 40 by car along the FV-1 and the FV-2. That is a good three and a half hours there and back, and closer to four on a coach that calls at three hotel zones on the way. None of those hours appear in the listing. Above all they do not appear in the stated duration: a tour marked as 3 hours that departs from Corralejo is a whole day if you are based in Morro Jable.

One operator does the sum openly. “Wild North and Corralejo from the south” is listed at 7 hours and €77 – the same sights as any northern tour, plus the island in between. So check the meeting point rather than the title. A tour name that begins with “Fuerteventura:” tells you nothing at all about where it starts. “Hotel pickup included” is not an address

Pickup is the exception on this island rather than the rule: only seven of the categorised offers mention it at all. And where it does exist, it covers defined zones, usually the ones around the operator’s own harbour. An operator in Corralejo drives around Corralejo and the edge of the dune park, not Costa Calma.

Whether your hotel is on that list is something to settle on the booking page before you pay, and by asking the operator if it is not spelled out. Read the tick next to “pickup included” as a promise and you will be standing at reception at seven in the morning waiting for a bus that never comes past.

The Lobos permit is not part of the price

Isla de Lobos is a nature park, and visiting requires a free permit obtained through lobospass.com. It is issued for two time windows that split at 2 pm, the first from 10 am, the second running until 6 pm, with a cap of 200 people on the island at any one time. The application window only opens a few days before the visit, not weeks ahead.

Whether your operator handles this varies from ticket to ticket. Some crossings explicitly include the park entry, others sell nothing but the boat ride and assume you have sorted the permit yourself. The rules also get adjusted from time to time. Treat it as a question that has to be answered before you book – with 25 offers in the Isla de Lobos category and 11,547 reviews, this is where people most often end up standing on the jetty and not going anywhere.

€16 gets you across, nothing more

Fifteen minutes on a speedboat, €16 return; the ferry charges €17. That is a ticket across a stretch of water: no guide, no swim stop, no lunch. Pay €16 expecting a guided tour and you will be disappointed. Pay €75 for the catamaran to the same island when all you wanted was to get across, and you have spent €58 too much. It is the same mistake running in two directions, and in between sits the crossing with snorkelling at €27.

Cofete is not in your rental agreement

Corralejo to Cofete beach is 130 kilometres and a good 2 hours 25, because the final stretch beyond Morro Jable is a dirt track. The line that decides the matter, though, is not in the tour listing but in your car hire contract: many agreements explicitly exclude unpaved roads. Drive up there anyway and you carry any damage yourself.

That is precisely why the guided versions cost money – €65 for 3 hours on the jeep safari, €57 for 4 hours on the trip to the beach and the “Villa Winter”. What you pay for is the vehicle and the person driving it, not the scenery. If you plan the drive yourself to save sixty euros, read your contract first and not just the reviews of the road. What 4.8 stars are actually worth

4.8 from twelve reviews says less than 4.2 from 5,142. In our listings that is not a thought experiment: 38 of the categorised offers have fewer than ten reviews, and 23 sit at 4.8 or better while still not reaching twenty. At the other end, 34 offers have more than a thousand.

It shows up most sharply under windsurfing and kitesurfing: 13 offers, 77 reviews between them, median €130. These are small schools with very thin feedback. They need not be worse, but you are booking without any evidence to go on, and you should know that. The most reviewed tour on the island, by contrast, is the dolphin trip from Morro Jable at 4.2 from 5,142 – of those two figures, the second is the one carrying information.

The time of day is half the tour

The trade wind follows a daily cycle here that you can plan around. Between seven and nine in the morning it blows lightly over Corralejo at eight to twelve knots, it builds through the middle of the day, and between two and five in the afternoon it reaches its daily peak of eighteen to twenty-six knots. A boat trip at nine and the same boat trip at three are two different outings, and only one of them is described in the listing. The last day of your holiday is the most expensive slot

If the operator cancels because of wind, which happens on Fuerteventura, you get your money back and you have no excursion. If the date was Wednesday, you rebook for Thursday. If it was your departure day, that is that.

As for the conditions themselves: many offers can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the start and not after that, while others are non-refundable from the outset. Which rule applies to you is stated at the specific booking and nowhere else, and it can differ between two tours run by the same operator. That is a line you read before paying, not the evening before.

Sightings cannot be booked

The dolphins and whales off Jandía are wild animals. No operator can commit to a sighting, and anyone holding out a guarantee is promising something that is not theirs to give. The ten offers for whale and dolphin watching start at €40, with a median of €75. Book it as a boat trip on which dolphins may turn up, and you will still come ashore satisfied on an empty day.

When you are better off not booking at all

On your arrival and departure days, because a delayed flight or a late car return tips the whole plan over. When you are staying a hundred kilometres away and nobody in the group honestly wants four hours on a bus. And whenever the operator gives no clear answer to a clear question.

That applies in particular to requirements. Across the entire range, exactly one offer states a minimum age: the buggy ride from Costa Calma, from 7 years. All the other buggy and quad tours, and the boats just as much, set their own limits, and those appear on the individual booking page.
