Fuerteventura boat trips in wind and swell

You cannot tell whether a Fuerteventura boat trip will run from one wind number. The vessel, route, wind direction, local wind sea and distant swell work together. The operator or master responsible for the vessel makes the final safety decision.

Wind, wind sea and swell are different readings

Local wind can build short, steep waves. This wind sea responds fairly directly to wind strength, direction and the distance over which it blows across water. Swell, or “mar de fondo”, can arrive from a distant weather system. It may therefore feel only lightly windy on land while the route is still uncomfortable.

The AEMET coastal forecast reports wind direction and strength, wind-sea height, and swell direction and height separately. That combination is more useful than a weather app showing only a wind icon at your resort.

How to use the official forecast

AEMET publishes warnings up to 48 hours ahead for the Canary Islands coast, a 24-hour text forecast and maps extending to five days. A practical sequence is:

1. Several days ahead, use the maps for a broad trend.
2. The day before, read the current text forecast and any warning for the relevant coastal zone.
3. On departure day, follow the operator’s message. It accounts for the particular vessel and route, which a regional forecast cannot assess.

An early departure is not automatically calmer. Wind can follow a daily cycle, but fronts, local acceleration and existing swell can override it. Choose against the actual forecast, not a universal time-of-day rule.

Starting point and route matter more than the town name

Island relief and wind direction can shelter one coast and expose another. That effect reverses when the wind direction changes and may end as soon as a boat rounds a headland. “Starts in Morro Jable” or “starts in Corralejo” is therefore not a permanent promise of calm water.

If anyone in your group is sensitive, ask before booking:

• Does the trip remain close to shore or enter more open water?
• Which vessel will actually operate the trip?
• Can the route change with the weather?
• Might swim or snorkelling stops be removed in rough conditions?

Lobos: a short crossing is still weather-dependent

The return speedboat ticket to Isla de Lobos costs €16 in the current dataset, lists 15 minutes and has 4.8 stars from 1,928 reviews. The conventional ferry ticket costs €17 and has 4.7 stars from 3,521 reviews.

A short crossing means less time aboard, not a guarantee of smooth water or departure. The Cabildo currently requires advance authorisation for the natural park. Check whether your operator arranges it and what happens to it after a weather cancellation. Old claims about free permits, fixed sessions or quotas should not be treated as permanent travel rules.

Vessel type alone does not decide whether it sails

Catamarans, ferries, RIBs and other motorboats respond differently to wind sea and swell. There is no universal order in which they are cancelled: size, design, certification, loading, harbour and course also matter.

The dataset contains 17 catamaran offers from €50 with a median of €75. Those figures reveal nothing about the seaworthiness of a particular vessel. The specific operator’s information and decision are what count.

What happens after a cancellation

Under GetYourGuide’s current terms, a supplier may cancel at short notice when external circumstances such as adverse weather make the activity impossible, significantly harder or unsafe. The booking price paid for the cancelled activity is refunded.

That does not create one universal rescheduling process, bank processing time or customer cancellation deadline. Those points are stated in the listing, voucher and terms applying to your booking. Read them before paying and keep the cancellation message.

A trip that operates may still follow an amended itinerary. If the listing allows weather-related route changes, stops may be adjusted. Check whether such a change still meets the purpose of your booking and which remedy the operator states.

Plan with spare time

Do not place an important boat trip on your final holiday day if you would need a replacement date. Booking in the first half of the stay creates room, but not a right to reschedule.
